The film production company Lucasfilm has officially secured Simon Kinberg to develop a new Star Wars film trilogy. Kinberg will serve as both writer and producer alongside Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy.
While there were rumours that this new trilogy would continue The Skywalker Saga with Episodes 10 to 12, insiders have refuted this, clarifying that it will instead introduce a new saga. This project will complement other Star Wars films in the works of directors like James Mangold, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Taika Waititi, and Donald Glover. Neither Lucasfilm nor Disney have commented on the specifics.
Kinberg is no stranger to the Star Wars universe, having co-created the acclaimed animated series Star Wars Rebels with Dave Filoni and Carrie Beck, which aired from 2014 to 2018. He also contributed as a consultant on Episode VII: The Force Awakens, directed by J J Abrams.
Beyond Star Wars, Kinberg has extensive experience in major franchises. He spent a decade working on the X-Men films and the Logan spinoff, which starred Hugh Jackman and was directed by James Mangold. Additionally, he produced the first two Deadpool films and the upcoming 2024 film Deadpool and Wolverine. Other notable projects include producing Ridley Scott's The Martian, scripting Mr. & Mrs. Smith, co-writing the Sherlock Holmes film starring Robert Downey Jr., and producing Kenneth Branagh’s Agatha Christie film trilogy, starting with Murder on the Orient Express.
Kinberg’s upcoming projects include producing Paramount’s remake of Stephen King’s The Running Man, currently in production under the direction of Edgar Wright and starring Glen Powell, Josh Brolin, Emilia Jones, William H Macy, and Lee Pace. He is also producing a new Star Trek film directed by Toby Haynes and written by Seth Grahame-Smith.
