Following the success of Top Gun: Maverick, actor Tom Cruise is in early negotiations with Paramount to star in the sequel of Days of Thunder, the NASCAR racing drama that was released in 1990 and directed by the late Tony Scott, who also helmed Cruise's successful Top Gun (1987).

A filmmaker and other potential actors have not onboarded the project yet. The project's script is yet to be locked in.

At this time, there are no additional creatives involved in the sequel, and with Cruise occupied promoting Mission: Impossible 8, filming Alejandro G Iñárritu's next project, and developing another Top Gun movie, this project is unlikely to start anytime soon.

Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the original film as well as Top Gun: Maverick, is also in talks to return for the sequel.

The first film centers on Cole Trickle, a determined race car driver who joins a new NASCAR team headed by a retired racing legend portrayed by Robert Duvall. The film received mixed reviews from critics, who praised its racing sequences, Hans Zimmer's musical score, and the performances of Cruise and Duvall. Since then, the film has risen in popularity among fans.
