Popular for his zombie film Shaun of the Dead, director Edgar Wright is in talks to direct Barbarella, led by Sydney Sweeney. This will be Sweeney's third collaboration with Sony Pictures, after Anyone But You and Madame Web.

Screenwriters Jane Goldman and Honey Ross are in consideration to pen script for the project.

Wright will up next direct the film adaptation of Stephen King's The Running Man, starring Glen Powell.

Barbarella was originally made in 1968 based on French writer and illustrator Jean-Claude Forest's comic series. The film, that starred Jane Fonda in the lead, didn't rake huge numbers at the box office but ended up gaining cult status. The film was also termed one of the most iconic for Fonda.

Attempts to bring back the film to screen had failed, before finally getting the official nod months ago. Fonda however expressed "worry" over "what it's going to be" back in 2023.
