Glen Powell, Laura Dern and Anthony Mackie to join hands for Monsanto

Glen Powell, Laura Dern and Anthony Mackie are all set to headline Monsanto, a legal drama directed by John Lee Hancock. The director is best known for his works in The Blind Side and Saving Mr. Banks.

According to its logline, Monsanto tells the true story of young, untried attorney Brent Wisner (Powell) who takes on a seemingly insurmountable case against the giant U.S. chemical company Monsanto on behalf of Dewayne “Lee” Johnson (Mackie) who used Monsanto’s best-known product Roundup, a wildly financially successful weed and grass pesticide killer, as part of his job as a high school groundskeeper. During the trial, Dr Melinda Rogers (Dern), the chief toxicologist of the Monsanto Company, testifies with certainty that Roundup is safe.

Rocket Science, the company that has been integral to the financing and producing of movies such as All Quiet on the Western Front and Ricky Stanicky, will launch international sales out of the Cannes Film Market later this month.

The film’s script was written along with Karl Spoerri’s Zurich Avenue and written by Michael Wisner, Alexandra Duparc, Ned Benson and Hancock. Monsanto will be produced by Moritz Borman, Eric Kopeloff, Philip Schulz-Deyle and Jon Levin along with HyperObject Industries’ Adam McKay and Kevin Messick.

Powell recently starred in Anyone But You opposite Sydney Sweeney. He also made a memorable mark in Tom Cruise’s top-grossing film Top Gun: Maverick. Up next, he has Richard Linklater’s upcoming Hit Man on Netflix which he co-wrote and produced with the director. He will also be seen in Twisters 2, helmed by Lee Isaac Chung.

Mackie, who is best known for starring as Sam Wilson/The Falcon in Marvel movies Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers: Endgame, will be seen as Captain America in Marvel Studios/Disney’s Captain America: Brave New World next year. He also recently starred in action comedy Twisted Metal which streamed on Peacock.

Dern has previously starred in hits like Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story; Greta Gerwig’s Little Women; HBO’s hit Big Little Lies, Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park and more. She recently executive produced and starred in Palm Royale. She will next appear in Lonely Planet for Netflix as well as an Untitled Noah Baumbach project for the streaming giant.
