We had earlier reported that actors Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis will be returning for the sequel of their 2003 hit Freaky Friday.

Now, it has been announced that Indian-American director Nisha Ganatra will be directing the film for Disney.

Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis, who starred in the first part directed by Mark Waters, are officially returning for the follow-up, according to Deadline.

Ganatra is best known for directing 2019’s Late Night with Mindy Kaling and Emma Thomps, and the 2020 film The High Note starring Dakota Johnson and Tracee Ellis Ross. She most recently helmed two episodes of Hulu’s Welcome to Chippendales. She will direct the sequel from a script by Jordan Weiss. The film will be produced by Andrew Gunn and Kristin Burr.

Curtis confirmed the news on her Instagram page with a picture of Lohan and a caption that read, "FFDEUX". No details regarding the plot have been out yet, but the makers are planning to start shooting in summer in Los Angeles. It is also unknown if the film is set for a theatrical release or will directly hit the OTT platform.

Based on Mary Rodgers's 1972 novel of the same name, Freaky Friday is the third adaptation of the same story and fifth installment overall in the Freaky Friday franchise. In Freaky Friday, the mother and daughter duo eat a magical Chinese fortune cookie, which results in them switching bodies. This results in hilarious situations, revelations and eventually, better bonding of the mother and daughter.

Along with Lohan and Curtis, the beloved film, which was a hit among millennials, also starred Chad Michael Murray and Mark Harmon.
