The popular fantasy novel The Neverending Story, authored by Michael Ende, is set to be adapted into a series of films through a joint partnership between Michale Ende Productions and See-Saw Films. It is to be noted that the book was previously adapted into the screen in the same name in 1984, directed by Wolfgang Petersen.
First published in 1979, the novel, originally penned in German, has been translated into 45 languages all around the world. It follows the story of a child named Bastian Balthasar, who is transported into a magical realm, Fantastica, while reading a mysterious book titled The Neverending Story.
Further details about the film have yet to be revealed.
It is worth mentioning that at the time of its release, it was the most expensive film produced outside the United States . It is the first in The NeverEnding Story film series. It adapts only the first half of the book. The second half of the book was then used as a rough basis for the second film, The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter (1990). The third film, The NeverEnding Story III: Escape from Fantasia (1994), has an original plot that is not based on the book.
