Oscars 2024: Hoyte Van Hoytema bags Best Cinematography award for Oppenheimer

Cillian Murphy-starrer and Christopher Nolan directorial, Oppenheimer, got the most number of wins at the 96th Academy Awards, this year. Out of 13 nominations, the film won 7 awards, including Cillian Murphy for Best Actor, Best Picture and Christpher Nolan for Best Director among others. Hoyte Van Hoytema has won the Best Cinematography award for Oppenheimer.

Hoytema had previously been nominated for an Oscar for Nolan's Dunkirk. His win for Oppenheimer marks his first Oscar trophy. On receiving the award, Hoytema said, "To all the aspiring filmmakers out there, I would like to say: Please try shooting that incredible new hit thing called celluloid. It’s much easier, they think, and it makes things look so much better.”

Hoytema beat other nominees such as Edward Lachman for El Conde, Rodrigo Prieto for Killers of the Flower Moon, Matthew Libatique for Maestro and Robbie Ryan for Poor things.

It is to be noted that Oppenheimer was shot using a combination of IMAX 65 mm and 65 mm large-format film. The film was also the first to have sections shot on IMAX black-and-white photographic film, which was created by Kodak and developed by FotoKem for them.

The list of Academy Award wins for Oppenheimer also includes, Robert Downey Jr for Best Supporting Actor, Jennifer Lame for Best Editing, Ludwig Goransson for Best Original Score.
