Nintendo announces sequel for The Super Mario Bros. Movie

A year after the release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Nintendo announced a sequel for the film. The video game's creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination Entertainment’s Chris Meledandri shared that the next movie is in development, with a release date set for April 3, 2026.

Sharing details about the sequel, Meledandri said that Illumination Studios Paris, which worked on the first film, is storyboarding the film. Directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic are returning for The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 alongside writer Matthew Fogel.

Miyamoto said that the film will "have a bright and fun story". "This time we’re thinking about broadening Mario’s world further. We’ll let you know once we’re at the stage where we’re ready to share more," he added.

The film will be co-financed by Universal Pictures and Nintendo and distributed theatrically worldwide by Universal. Illumination founder and CEO Melendantri and Shigeru Miyamoto, Representative Director, Fellow of Nintendo, will produce.

The original The Super Mario Bros. Movie, released in 2023, served as the second adaptation of Nintendo's iconic platforming video game franchise and became the second-highest-grossing movie of the year.
