Warner Bros., which recently made changes to their release schedule, has announced that an untitled event film from Legendary and Dune director Denis Villeneuve is slated to release in IMAX on December 18, 2026.
The filmmaker began talks with Legendary after the success of Dune: Part Two, to adapt Nuclear War: A Scenario, the Pulitzer Prize finalist book of Annie Jacobsen. It is uncertain whether the project will be included in this upcoming release.
Jacobsen's book "explores a ticking-clock scenario about what would happen in the event of a nuclear war, based on dozens of exclusive new interviews with military and civilian experts who built the weapons and have been privy to the response plans and have been responsible for those decisions should they have needed to be made.”
Meanwhile, Villeneuve and Legendary are also collaborating to develop the third film in the Dune franchise. The second film starring Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya and Rebecca Ferguson hit theatres on March 1 and was the top-grossing film of 2024 until Pixar's Inside Out 2 took its place.
The Warner Bros. release calendar also mentions an untitled Monsterverse film, which is scheduled for March 26, 2027. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was the most recent film in the franchise, which hit theatres on March 29. The film marked the second-highest opening of the franchise and the highest opening of filmmaker Adam Wingard's career.
There was a Warner Bros. and Locksmith animated movie scheduled for release on the same date earlier, but it's been postponed. The film is still planned to be released but on a new date: July 23, 2027.
