The distribution company Warner Bros. Pictures announced the release date of Denis Villeneuve's next film. It will come out in theatres on December 18, 2026. It will reunite Villeneuve with the production company Legendary Pictures after the two Dune films. The filmmaker had earlier said that his next would not be a Dune film and was in talks with Legendary Pictures for a film on nuclear war. However, reports suggest that Villeneuve have perhaps changed his mind and could focus on the Dune franchise.

The makers are yet to announce the plot of the film. In a recent interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Villeneuve had said that he was considering four projects. He had also revealed that any prospective delays in adapting Frank Hebert's book Dune Messiah would have to do with ensuring that he has the right script. He also added that he might wish to work on a more time-sensitive film “before tackling Dune Messiah.”

Villeneuve's last film Dune: Part Two, starring Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya, and Austin Butler, has grossed $700 million from theatres worldwide.
