Will Smith has signed on to star in Resistor, a film based on Daniel Suarez's science-fiction thriller Influx. Zak Olkewicz wrote the first draft of the screenplay, and Eric Warren Singer is working on the latest one. Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Tony Shaw, and Steve Tisch are producing the film through Escape Artists, alongside Jon Mone and Smith through Westbrook and Dave Wilson. On the other hand, Heather Washington is serving as executive producer. Sony Pictures is also attached to the project as its distributor; the studio last collaborated with Smith on Bad Boys: Ride or Die.

The makers are yet to reveal plot details, but Influx follows physicist Jon Grady and his team's revolutionary discovery that lands them in a prison run by a secret agency hoarding stolen technology. Now, Grady and his fellow captives must fight to escape from captivity and expose the truth.

The project has long been in development at Escape Artists, but after Singer sent it a screenplay that excited its executives, they found it an ideal opportunity for Smith. Then, Smith read the screenplay, met the executives, and committed himself to the project. The executives of Escape Artists are now in the process of finding a director for Resistor.
