Denzel Washington said at the American Black Film Festival that he would be seen less frequently in films in the immediate future. Addressing the crowd at the festival, the actor said, "The things that are going on for me professionally behind the camera are as important to me now as in front of the camera. I think there’s less and less time I’ll be spending in front of the camera."

The actor also stated that he only watches his own films, and that too, to be familiar with the films just enough to prepare for interviews.

Washington's upcoming projects include Gladiator 2, Ridley Scott's sequel to the 2001 Best Picture Oscar winner. Gladiator 2 stars Paul Mescal in the lead and is slated for a November release. He is also part of The Piano Lesson, featuring his son Malcolm as its director, his other son John David and daughter Olivia as actors, and his daughter Katia as its producer. The Piano Lesson also stars Samuel L Jackson, Danielle Deadwyler, and Corey Hawkins.

An emotional Washington said about the film, "As a parent, as a father, you want to jump in. It’s hard letting them go.”
