Cynthia Erivo's Elphaba defies gravity in new Wicked teaser

A new teaser trailer for the upcoming live-action Wicked film, was unveiled during the Tony Awards on Sunday. The film stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in lead roles.

Glinda (played by Ariana Grande) and Elphaba (played by Cynthia Erivo) are two unlikely friends who join hands at Shiz University where they learn the tricks of the trade to the magical land of Oz which puts their skills and friendship to the test. The story will also revolve around the important Emerald City.

Directed by Jon M Chu, Wicked is the first of a two-part film adaptation of Holzman and Schwartz's stage musical of the same name. The Broadway musical is itself based on author Gregory Maguire’s 1995 book, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West.

The project adapts characters that originated in L. Frank Baum’s 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was brought to life in the Oscar-winning 1939 film musical The Wizard of Oz starring Judy Garland as Dorothy.

The cast of the film also includes Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Ethan Slater as Boq, Jeff Goldblum as The Wizard, Bowen Yang and Bronwyn James as Pfannee and ShenShen, Marissa Bode as Elphaba's sister Nessarose, Keala Settle as Miss Coddle, Aaron Teoh as Avaric and Colin Michael Carmichael as Professor Nikidik.

The first part of the film is scheduled for release on November 27, 2024, while Wicked: Part Two will be released in December 2025.
