Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which released in theatres on March 30, has roared its way to becoming the highest-grossing film in the Legendary and Warner Bros MonsterVerse franchise by earning over $570 million at the global box office. This record has smashed 2017’s Kong: Skull Island which generated revenue of $568.6 million.
The film is currently the second-highest grossing Hollywood movie of 2024, coming second to Dune: Part Two. In the film, Kong encounters more of his species in the Hollow Earth and must unite again with Godzilla to stop the tyrannical Skar King and the powerful, frost-breathing Shimo from invading the Earth's surface.
Our CE review of the film read, "With all the issues you wonder what emboldened the filmmakers to make this many poor choices. It is possible that they thought if the Titan fights were extravagant enough the audience would be satisfied and forgive the other shortcomings, and hence decided to focus less on the writing."
Directed by Adam Wingard, the film stars Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Dan Stevens, Kaylee Hottle, Alex Ferns, and Fala Chen. Hall, Henry, and Hottle reprise their roles from the previous film. It is a sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong (2021), and the fifth film in the MonsterVerse franchise. It is also the 38th film of the Godzilla franchise and the 13th film in the King Kong franchise.
Legendary Pictures has backed Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire with Warner Bros. Pictures as the distributor.
