A new live-action series is making its way from the Star Trek universe. The writer-director of Dear White People and The Haunted Mansion, Justin Simien, is joining hands with one of the voice stars of Star Trek: Lower Decks Tawny Newsome to develop this series for Paramount+.

Simien, moderating, and Newsome, on stage, made the announcement on Saturday during the Star Trek Universe panel in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con.

The series is set in the 25th century, in the post-Star Trek: Picard era. The show follows Federation outsiders working on a resort planet who discover their daily lives are being broadcast to the entire quadrant. The series is described as a workplace comedy, similar to The Office and Parks and Recreation.

The series will be written and executive-produced by Simien, Newsome, and Alex Kurtzman, the mastermind of the Trek franchise. Trevor Roth, Rod Roddenberry, and Aaron Baiers are also executive producing. The show is produced by CBS Studios.

If the show is picked up for a series, it will be the next in a lineup of animated and live-action shows that include the upcoming Starfleet Academy, Strange New Worlds, and Lower Decks.

Simien has also written and directed Bad Hair. He has Flashdance, Geiger and Plan A in the pipeline. Newsome, on the other hand, has also reprised her voice role in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. She was last seen in Quiz Lady in 2023.
