Terminator Zero showrunner Mattson Tomlin gave a sneak peek into the show at the recent Anime Expo in Los Angeles. During the event, Tomlin stated that his show has the serial killer vibe of 1984's Terminator, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger in the titular role and directed by James Cameron. The show follows the events of Terminator 2: Judgment Day, skipping the goings-on in the TV show and films that followed, as per CNET.

Tomlin described its titular character as a relentless killing machine, as in the 1984 original.

Set for an August 29 premiere on Netflix, the plot of Terminator Zero is set across two timelines: “2022: A future war has raged for decades between the few human survivors and an endless army of machines. 1997: The AI known as Skynet gained self-awareness and began its war against humanity.”

Netflix's synopsys for the show reads thus: “Caught between the future and this past is a soldier (voiced by Sonoya Mizuno) sent back in time to change the fate of humanity. She arrives in 1997 to protect a scientist named Malcolm Lee (André Holland) who works to launch a new AI system (Rosario Dawson) designed to compete with Skynet’s impending attack on humanity. As Malcolm navigates the moral complexities of his creation, he is hunted by an unrelenting assassin from the future which forever alters the fate of his three children."

Timothy Olyphant headlines the show as the voice cast member of Terminator, alongside Ann Dowd as The Prophet, who guides the resistance.
