Wicked release date moves up for the second time

The film adaptation of the hit Broadway show by Universal, Wicked, will open earlier than its scheduled release date. The musical was based on author Gregory Maguire's 1995 book, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West.

The two-part film's first installment was initially planned for release on November 27, but the makers have announced that the film will open five days ahead on November 22. With this rescheduling, the film averts a clash with Disney's Moana 2.

Wicked is a prequel to the iconic events of The Wizard of Oz and tells the story of two unlikely friends, Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West) and Galinda (whose name later changes to Glinda the Good Witch), who struggle through opposing personalities and viewpoints, rivalry over the same love interest, reactions to the Wizard's corrupt government, and, ultimately, Elphaba's public fall from grace.

This is the second change brought to the film, starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. It was first planned to release on December 25, then moved up to November 27.

The film, directed by Jon M Chu, also stars Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Ethan Slater as Boq, Jeff Goldblum as The Wizard, Bowen Yang and Bronwyn James as Pfannee and ShenShen, Marissa Bode as Elphaba's sister Nessarose, Keala Settle as Miss Coddle, Aaron Teoh as Avaric, and Colin Michael Carmichael as Professor Nikidik.

The second installment is planned to be released on November 26, 2025.
