Jared Leto's Tron: Ares begins filming

Following several delays and obstacles, filming on Tron: Ares has finally started. Plans for a third Tron movie, which would have followed Tron: Legacy (2010), were announced by Disney in 2015, but they fell through as soon as the second movie was released. The project was resurrected in 2017 with Jared Leto slated as the star. The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes caused the project to be postponed once more, just when filming was finally scheduled to begin in August of last year.

Director Joachim Rønning, who has big Disney sequel experience from 2017's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, is behind the camera for the movie and has the first official photo from Tron 3. In the image Rønning shared, we can see a production chair with the film's logo, which seemingly refers to it as just Tron 3 (stylized as TR3N). He captioned it saying, "Week 1 on the grid."

Besides Jared, the film also features Evan Peters, Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith, and Cameron Monaghan among others. However, details on their roles are yet to be revealed.

The third instalment of the Tron franchise, the original film features Jeff Bridges, a computer engineer, who gets transported into the world that he created and has to team up with Tron played by Bruce Boxleitner. The second film, Tron Legacy, starred Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde, along with Jeff.

The screenplay is penned by Jesse Wigutow. Jared Leto will also serve as a producer. A release date is yet to be announced by the makers.
