Matt Reeves' sequel to The Batman will no longer be releasing for its scheduled October 2, 2026 release. Warner Bros announced that it will now be moved to the next year and hit theatres on October 1, 2027 in Imax.
This is not the first time that the makers have postponed the film's release date. Since it was announced in 2022, The Batman Part II has undergone several changes on when it will debut.
In a social media post on Threads, James Gunn has explained that a full script for the movie hasn't been written yet. "Yes, it is true. The only reason for the delay is there isn’t a full script (those of you who follow me here probably know that already). Matt is committed to making the best film he possibly can, and no one can accurately guess exactly how long a script will take to write. Once there is a finished script, there is around two years for pre-production, shooting and post-production on big films," he wrote.
This opening left by the Batman sequel gave way for Alejandro G Iñárritu and Tom Cruise's upcoming film to release on October 2, 2026.
The studio made further changes to the release dates of other films slated to release including Bong Joon Ho-Robert Pattinson’s Mickey 17 and Ryan Coogler’s Sinners. The two films are swapping release dates. While Mickey 17 will now open in theatres on March 7, 2025, Sinners is slated for release on April 18, 2025.
Production for the sequel is not schedued to begin until late summer. "With a VFX-heavy sequel such as this one, a fall 2026 theatrical release is within reach," the outlet stated. Robert Pattinson will be seen reprising his role in The Batman Part II.
Cruise and Iñárritu’s film marks the filmmaker's first English-language movie. Although the story is under wraps, the logline states that it follows “the most powerful man in the world” as he “embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity’s savior before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything.” Apart from Tom Cruise, the film also stars an ensemble cast consisting of Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde and Riz Ahmed. Iñárritu will direct from a script he wrote with Sabina Berman, Alexander Dinelaris and Nicolás Giacobone.
Meanwhile, Mickey 17 follows Pattinson as he signs up to be a disposable employee where if one of his iterations die, a new body is generated. When one of his multiples survives a human expedition, he goes head to head with a new multiple Mickey 18. The film also stars Mark Ruffalo, Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun and Toni Collette.
