Sydney Sweeney, the star of HBO’s Euphoria, has spoken out against body-shaming critics in a powerful response that highlights her dedication to her craft. Recently, the actor took to Instagram to address a barrage of derogatory comments about her body, which surfaced after paparazzi captured photos of her enjoying the sun in a bikini at her home in Florida Keys.

The Instagram video shared by Sweeney featured numerous screenshots of the comments, many of which were reportedly pulled from a Daily Mail article. Among the criticisms, one person called her “quite frumpy,” while another cruelly described her as an “average chunky Yankee girl.” These harsh remarks prompted the actor to reveal a glimpse of her behind-the-scenes preparations for an upcoming role.

The video transitioned from the negative comments to footage of Sweeney in full workout mode, showcasing her rigorous training regimen for her role as Christy Martin in a biopic about the legendary boxer. The clips depicted Sweeney flipping massive tyres, lifting weights, boxing, and flexing her well-defined biceps. Her athletic dedication silenced the critics while drawing attention to her commitment to portraying the pioneering athlete.

Sweeney addressed the controversy in a candid Instagram post from October 16, writing, “Well, the cat’s out of the bag thanks to some paps in bushes, so here’s a little BTS from my film I’m working on right now.” She further elaborated on her preparation for the role, adding, “Over the past few months, I’ve been immersed in training to bring to life the story of an incredible woman—a true champion who fought battles both inside and outside the ring.”

The film delves into the life of Christy Martin, an icon in women’s boxing during the 1990s. Martin shattered barriers in the sport, becoming the first woman to grace the cover of Sports Illustrated in 1996, a feat only matched by Ronda Rousey in 2015. Over her illustrious career, Martin earned accolades such as being inducted into the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame in 2016 and the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2020—the first female boxer to achieve both honors.

Beyond her career triumphs, Martin’s personal life was marked by immense challenges. In 2010, she survived a harrowing murder attempt by her then-husband, James V. Martin, who stabbed her multiple times and left her for dead. Despite the trauma, Martin fought back—both literally and figuratively—proving her resilience. Her ex-husband was subsequently sentenced to 25 years in prison.
