Filmmaker Doug Liman, known for The Bourne Identity, who will next be making a supernatural thriller titled Deeper, has confirmed that actor Tom Cruise has joined the film.

According to the Deadline, Liman shared the development with Roger Friedman of Showbiz411 that he is interested in making a "scary" film at this point in his career. He added that he has never done a film like that, and neither has Tom Cruise. The film has been under discussion for almost a decade. It was originally set up for MGM in 2016, after the acquisition of a hot spec from Max Landis. The film was first expected to take off with Bradley Cooper in the lead with Kornel Mundruczo helming; the crew went under a rejig with Idris Elba and director Baltasar Kormakur. Both iterations failed to materialise.

With Deeper in its early stages, it is not yet confirmed if the Warner Bros. film will be Liman's immediate next. Liman last made The Instigators starring Cassey Affleck Matt Damon, who has collaborated with the director in The Bourne Identity.

Deeper is about an astronaut who faces a terrifying force while going on a deep dive into a trench where no human has ever set his/her foot. Tom Cruise was last seen in Mission: Impossible—Dead Reckoning Part One and will next be seen in Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning. The actor will next be seen in director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's American black comedy film Judy.
