
HBO has dropped the trailer and revealed the premiere date for its highly anticipated two-part documentary Wise Guy: David Chase and The Sopranos. It will debut on September 7. HBO will broadcast both parts one after the other, and the show will be accessible on the streaming platform Max too. The documentary offers an exploration into the creation and lasting legacy of the series The Sopranos, starring James Gandolfini as the head honcho of a mafia family and Lorraine Bracco as his therapist Jennifer Melfi, among others. Academy Award winner Alex Gibney is the director of the show.
As The Sopranos celebrates its 25th anniversary, Wise Guy offers a deep dive into the life and career of David Chase, the creator of the legendary series. The documentary examines the creative and personal factors that influenced Chase's work on it, revealing the intricate connections between his life and the characters he brought to life. Set against a replica of psychiatrist Dr Melfi’s office, Gibney zooms in on Chase, exploring the origins of The Sopranos and its enduring impact.
The documentary has interviews with key cast members such as Michael Imperioli, Lorraine Bracco, and Edie Falco, as well as writers and producers who played a part in the show’s success. It is also packed with archival footage, including behind-the-scenes glimpses, audition tapes, and scenes from the show.
Produced by Jigsaw Productions, Wise Guy had its world premiere at the 2024 Tribeca Festival. Ophelia Harutyunyan and Gibney serve as producers, with Nicole Lambert, Richard Perello, and Stacey Offman as executive producers. HBO's Nancy Abraham, Lisa Heller, and Sara Rodriguez also serve as executive producers.
