A series that will serve as a prequel to the Pacific Rim franchise is being developed, reports Variety. It will be the first in a series of projects as part of a first-look deal between Legendary Entertainment and Chronology. As per the deal, Carmen Lewis and Eric Heisserer’s company Chronology will create and oversee IP-driven, related projects for Legendary Entertainment.
Legendary Television President Jason Clodfelter said, “Eric is a multitalented, prolific creator whose track record of critical and commercial successes speaks for itself. We are thrilled to launch our partnership with Eric, Chronology, and Carmen, with a new entry in the epic, globally popular ‘Pacific Rim’ universe. We are certain their vision will make for an enthralling expansion to Legendary’s beloved franchise.”
As a writer, Heisserer got a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar nomination for Arrival, starring Amy Adams, in 2017. He is also known for films such as 2010’s A Nightmare on Elm Street remake, Bloodshot, Lights Out, Bird Box, and Hours. He developed Shadow and Bone for Netflix based on Leigh Bardugo’s book series.
In the franchise, a rift underneath the Pacific Ocean lets giant monsters into the Earth, and they start to attack human beings. Humans respond to the monsters' attack by creating massive fighting robots known as Jaegers. Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 film Pacific Rim started the franchise, and it had a 2018 sequel titled Pacific Rim: Uprising. The two-season-long anime series called Pacific Rim: The Black is also part of the franchise.
