The trailer for the much-awaited Moana 2 was unveiled by actor Dwayne Johnson at Disney’s D23 expo on Saturday. The actor who voices Maui received a standing ovation as he enthralled audience with a musical performance along with his co-star Auli'i Cravalho who is returning for the sequel.
The almost two-minute-long trailer showcases an older Moana meeting her younger sister Simea for the first time. She tells her the story of how her ancestors wanted to connect her island with the people of the entire ocean. As a wayfarer, she is now on a mission to finish what they started. Moana and her crew are now in search of the lost island of Motufetu, which once connected the ocean, now hidden by a jealous God of Storms. We also get a look at the spirit of Moana's grandmother who passed away after she left to find Maui. Not to mention the return of the Kakamora coconut tribe, who are seen shooting blow darts at Moana.
Along with rooster Heihei and pet pig Pua, Moana, joined with Maui is determined solve a crucial mystery regarding her life and the oceans.
The film also features returning stars Rachel House (Moana’s Grandma, Tala), Temuera Morrison (Moana’s father, Chief Tui) and Nicole Scherzinger (Moana’s mother, Sina), as well as the voices of Hualālai Chung, David Fane and Rose Matafeo as Moana’s new crew members Moni, Kele and Loto, respectively. Awhimai Fraser voices mysterious new character Matangi; Gerald Ramsey plays Moana’s ancestor, Tautai Vasa; and Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda lends her voice to Moana’s adoring and adorable little sister, Simea.
Moana 2 is directed by David Derrick Jr, Jason Hand and Dana Ledoux Miller, and produced by Christina Chen and Yvett Merino. The film's music is by Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, as well as Opetaia Foa’i and Mark Mancina, who worked on the first film. Jared Bush and Miller are writing the film, which is executive produced by Jennifer Lee, Bush and Johnson.
Moana 2 will hit theatres in India on November 29, 2024.
