Anne Hathaway gives an update on development of The Princess Diaries 3

Actor Anne Hathaway says the third instalment of "The Princess Diaries" is on.

Hathaway, who recently starred opposite Nicholas Galitzine in The Idea of You, said in an interview with the V magazine that despite being unable to share the updates, the project is "in a good place".

“We’re in a good place,” she said. “That’s all I can say. There’s nothing to announce yet. But we’re in a good place.” In the same conversation, she heaped praise on the film’s director Garry Marshall. “He valued my take on being a teenage girl and elevated me to such a valued status on set that it never occurred to me on other sets that I didn’t have that same autonomy, or that same ability to collaborate," she said.

Back in November 2022, Disney confirmed that they are making a third installment in The Princess Diaries franchise with Supergirl screenwriter Aadrita Mukerji. When it was announced, Hathaway wished to work with her on-screen grandmother Julie Andrews who essayed the role of Queen Clarisse Renaldi. "If there’s any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work." But Andrews said that wasn’t likely she’d return to the beloved Disney franchise, saying, "I think we know that it’s probably not going to be possible."

Directed by the late Garry Marshall and based Meg Cabot’s novel, the original 2001 film followed an awkward American teenager Mia Thermopolis who learns she’s the heir to the throne of the European kingdom of Genovia. Julia Andrews played the fictional nation’s queen Clarisse Renaldi. It was then followed by the sequel in 2004. Both the films were box office hits and became a cult classic over time.
