The Sega video game Golden Axe is all set to be made into a 10-episode animated series by Comedy Central. CBS Studios is producing the series in association with Sony Pictures Television and Original Film.

Emmy Award-winning Matthew Rhys leads the voice cast of Golden Axe which will also feature the voices of Danny Pudi, Lisa Gilroy, Liam McIntyre and Carl Tart. The series is described as a comical and loving homage to Golden Axe, Sega's 1989 video game series.

Golden Axe will see seasoned heroes Ax Battler, Tyris Flare, and Gilius Thunderhead reunite to defend Yuria from the clutches of the villainous Death Adder, who just can't be kept down. This time, they're joined by Hampton Squib, a newbie warrior who's enthusiastic but definitely not ready for the challenge. The animated series comes from executive producers Mike McMahon and Joe Chandler.

Gilius Thunderhead is voiced by Rhys, while McIntyre plays Ax Battler and Gilroy portrays Tyris Flare. Thunderhead is a surly dwarf warrior, with questionable cleanliness patterns, and a chip on his shoulder. Battler is a hulking barbarian, his loyalty and kindness as vast as his muscles. Flare, on the other hand, is a warrior who commands arcane power, as lethal with her spells as she is with her tongue.

Chandler and McMahon will co-write the first episode with Chandler serving as showrunner. Other executive producers include Sega's Haruki Satomi, Shuji Utsumi and Toru Nakahara, and Original Film's Neal H. Moritz, Pavun Shetty and Toby Ascher. The animation studio for Golden Axe is Titmouse.
