Alex Garland opens up about his plan to stop directing films post Civil War release

With the release of Civil War just around the corner, filmmaker Alex Garland told The Guardian that he intends to take a break from the job for the foreseeable future. Referring to a 2022 interview where he suggested that he might focus on script writing for a while, Garland told The Guardian, "Nothing’s changed. I’m in a very similar state. I’m not planning to direct again in the foreseeable future."

The revelation comes even as Garland is set to work on Warfare, which marks Ray Mendoza's directorial debut. Describing his role for Warfare as that of a supporting cast member, Garland told the publication, “I respect [Mendzoa] a great deal, though we’re very different.”

Earlier in 2022, before his sci-fi film Ex Machina, he told the New York Times that he would like to go back to writing scripts for other filmmakers.

Kirsten Dunst plays a photojournalist who covers a conflict related to politics in the US in Civil War. It follows Dunst's Lee as she teams up with Cailee Spaeny's Jessie, Wagner Moura's Joel, and Stephen McKinley Henderson's Sammy to interview Nick Offerman's president character before he gets removed from the position. It is slated for an April 12 release in theatres worldwide.
