After Margot Robbie-Greta Gerwig's film on Barbie, a new documentary on the Mattel's iconic doll, Black Barbie: A Documentary, is in the making.
Attached to Shondaland, the documentary will be directed by Lagueria Davis and will explore how three Black women at Mattel eventually became responsible for Black Barbie in 1980. The documentary will feature interviews and retellings of how important are representation, especially in dolls that could have an impact during the childhood.
Black Barbie is executive produced by Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers for Shondaland, Grace Lay and Sumalee Montano for LinLay Productions, Camilla Hall for Lady & Bird Films, Milan Chakraborty and Jyoti Sarda.
“Telling Black Barbie's story has been such a personal journey and it warms my heart to celebrate the legacy of my aunt Beulah Mae Mitchell, Kitty Black Perkins, and Stacey McBride Irby in our film. We couldn't have asked for better collaborators than Shondaland and Netflix to bring this story to the world," said Lagueria in a statement.
