Actor David McCallum, known for his role on the long-running CBS procedural NCIS, has died, the network said in a statement. He was 90.
“He was the kindest, coolest, most patient and loving father,” his son Peter McCallum wrote in a statement from the family, provided by CBS. “He always put family before self.”
CBS said McCallum died of natural causes surrounded by his family at New York Presbyterian Hospital.
According to the BBC, Mr McCallum is famously known for his role in 'The Man From U.N.C.L.E.' - in which he played a Russian agent. The series ended in 1968 and he received several Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for playing the role of Illya Kuryakin on the show.
Mr McCallum also starred in films including The Great Escape, 'The Greatest Story Ever Told' and 'A Night To Remember'. He guest starred on the TV series 'Perry Mason' and 'The Outer Limits'. He also appeared on more than 450 episodes of 'NCIS' as Ducky, an autopsy expert.
The James Bond-influenced The Man From U.N.C.L.E., in which Vaughn’s Solo and McCallum’s Kuryakin battled the evil forces of THRUSH around the globe (thanks to the glories of stock footage), was quite the pop-culture phenomenon in the mid-1960s
He also acted as Kuryakin on the sitcom Please Don’t Eat the Daisies; he reprised the role in 1983 for the TV movie The Return of the Man from U.N.C.L.E.: The Fifteen Years Later Affair.
A Guy Ritchie-directed feature adaptation of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. was released in August 2015 with Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer starring as Solo and Kuryakin, respectively.
