How I Met Your Father cancelled after two seasons

American streamer Hulu has pulled the plug on actor Hilary Duff-led sitcom How I Met Your Father after just two seasons. It was also streaming on Disney+.

The cancellation comes less than two months after the finale of the second season which aired on July 11, 2023. The show was a sequel to the classic sitcom How I Met Your Mother. Executive producer Craig Thomas, who is also the co-creator of the original series, How I Met Your Mother, which aired for nine seasons, wrote on X: "Thanks to the wonderful cast and crew who worked so hard on #HIMYF, and to all who checked it out, sometimes this is how it goes in this crazy business..."

How I Met Your Father, released in January 2022, picks up eight years after the events of How I Met Your Mother and follows the stories of Sophie (Duff) and her group of friends in the midst of figuring out who they are, what they want out of life and how to fall in love in the age of dating apps and limitless options in Manhattan, New York.

Guest stars included Judge Judy, Meghan Trainor, Lance Bass and Joey Fatone from Nsync, Paget Brewster and Clark Gregg, while Cobie Smulders, Neil Patrick Harris, Laura Bell Bundy and Kyle MacLachlan reprised roles from How I Met Your Mother.

Patrick Harris returned as Barney Stinson in the season 2 finale in a scene that saw Sophie crash into the back of his car. It was the first (and now only) episode of the series to be filmed in front of a live studio audience.

The series was created by former This Is Us showrunners Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger. Aptaker and Berger executive produced alongside “How I Met Your Mother” creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas and How I Met Your Mother director Pamela Fryman, as well as Adam Londy and Suzy Mamann Greenberg. Hilary Duff serves as a producer.

How I Met Your Father hailed from 20th Television, which shares Disney with Hulu as a parent company.
