Barry Newman, known for his role in the 1971 film Vanishing Point has passed away. The actor was also known for his stint in the NBC series Petrocelli which aired from 1974-76. 

The actor reportedly passed away on May 11, but the news was confirmed by his friends on social media only recently. The 92-year-old actor passed away in a hospital in New York. The cause of his demise has not been established.

Newman began his career with Broadway shows. His performance in the 1970 film, The Lawyer bagged him the opportunity to star in Vanishing Point, a film featuring much high-speed police chases. In the film, he portrayed a drug addict who was promised free meth in return for successfully delivering a car to California from Colorado in 15 hours. Richard C Sarafian directed Vanishing Point which eventually became a cult classic.

Newman was later seen in several films, some of which include, Daylight helmed by Sylvester Stallone, Michael Lehmann's 40 Days and 40 Nights and The Limey directed by Steven Soderbergh. He was nominated for an Emmy for Best Actor in 1975, and once for Golden Globe in 1976, both for his stint in Petrocelli.

Newman took a break from acting after being diagnosed with vocal-cord cancer in 2009. In 2022, he returned to play a role in Finding Hannah

Barry Newman is survived by his wife.
