The highly-anticipated film Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig, will soon be released in theatres this Friday. Following the critical responses pouring in after its world premiere, it has been confirmed that the film indeed lives up to the hype.
Christy Lemire of RoberEbert.com penned, "Barbie, director and co-writer Greta Gerwig's summer splash, is a dazzling achievement, both technically and in tone. It's a visual feast that succeeds as both a gleeful escape and a battle cry."
A. Felicia Wade of Discussing Film wrote, "Greta Gerwig’s Barbie is an unmissable spectacle that will make laugh, cry & ponder questions about your own mortality"
Film Updates on their Twitter handle wrote, “Anchored by a charming Margot Robbie, an endearing America Ferrera and a phenomenal Ryan Gosling, Greta Gerwig’s hilarious, heartfelt and incredibly moving ‘BARBIE’ is a triumph that is destined to become a future classic.”
Meanwhile, Peter Debruge of Variety wrote, "Greta Gerwig loads plenty of food for thought in a hot pink pop fantasia, poking fun at patriarchy and corporate parent Mattel in her treatment of the iconic "girls can do anything" doll.
Ross Bonaime of Collider called the film "Fantastic" and lauded the performances of the leading duo, Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling," Robbie is very funny when she needs to be, but we can feel the weight of this character learning that the world isn't what she always hoped it would be. She discovers she might not be the icon of change that she thought she was and begins to understand just how terrifying change can be."
Ross Bonaime further wrote, " Gosling is equally fantastic as Ken, a lovable idiot who thinks the patriarchy has something to do with horses and men ruling the world together. Ken seeing the power that men have in the real world and embracing it could've been abrasive, but Gosling always manages to make this character goofy and understandable.
Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian gave it three stars out of five and wrote, "Greta Gerwig's bubblegum-fun-cum-feminist-thesis indulges Ken but pulls its punches as it trips between satire and advert."
Directed by Greta Gerwig, the film features an ensemble cast, Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Alexandra Shipp, America Ferrera, Michael Cera, Emma Mackey, Hari Nef, Scott Evans, Ncuti Gatwa, Will Ferrell, Dua Lipa, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Connor Swindells, Ariana Greenblatt, Emerald Fennell, Sharon Rooney, Nicola Coughlan, Ritu Arya, Ana Cruz Kaye, and Jamie Demetriou.
Greta Gerwig co-wrote the film along with Noah Baumbach. The music for the film is composed by Alexandre Desplat, who earlier collaborated with the director in the 2019 film Little Women.
