
Musical drama The Color Purple which released recently, dominated the box office and has collected $18.15 million on its first day. As per reports, it is the second-biggest Christmas Day opening of all time after the 2009 film Sherlock Holmes which cloaked $24.6 million.
Based on the 1982 novel, The Color Purple is backed by Steven Spielberg, Scott Sanders, Oprah Winfrey and Quincy Jones. It is directed by Blitz Bazawule and is set against the backdrop of 1900s America and will follow a young woman of colour and her struggles to navigate.
Actors Halle Bailey and Phylicia Mpasi have been cast as sisters Nettie and Celia who bear the brunt of the discriminatory society.
