HBO has officially announced the renewal of its original drama series, The Gilded Age, for a third season.

The period drama from Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes has scored a third-season renewal at HBO. The pickup comes just four days after The Gilded Age’s second season finale on Dec. 17.

“We’re so proud of what Julian Fellowes and The Gilded Age family have achieved. From the costumes to the production design and performances, the show has captivated so many week after week. Along with our partners at Universal Television, we are thrilled to continue this grand tale for a third season,” said Francesca Orsi HBO Programming EVP and head of HBO Drama Series and Films.

Adds Erin Underhill, Universal Television president: “There is much more story to tell with The Gilded Age. We’re delighted that HBO is giving fans another season of Julian Fellowes’ incredible storytelling. The cast and crew put so much of their heart and soul into the last two seasons, and we’re so proud that all this hard work is paying off with another season…you won’t want to miss what’s next!”

The second season of The Gilded Age is set against the backdrop of the American Gilded Age, a time of significant economic upheaval and societal shifts. The season opens in 1883 with Bertha Russell's (Carrie Coon) struggle for social recognition. Viewers follow her attempts to navigate and ultimately lead high society, paralleled by her husband George Russell's (Morgan Spector) industrial challenges. Simultaneously, the show explores Marian’s (Louisa Jacobson) journey in the Brook House and the evolving dynamics within the Scott family in Brooklyn.

All of The Gilded Age's regulars returned for Season 2, including Taissa Farmiga, Blake Ritson, Simon Jones, Jack Gilpin, Cynthia Nixon, Christine Baranski, Kelli O'Hara, Donna Murphy, Debra Monk, and Kristine Nielsen, among others.

The Gilded Age is a co-production of HBO and Universal TV. Fellowes serves as creator, writer and executive producer. Gareth Neame executive produces with David Crockett, who directs. Michael Engler, Bob Greenblatt and Salli Richardson-Whitfield executive produce. Sonja Warfield serves as writer/executive producer.
