Barbenheimer was a phenomenon to behold when marketing strategists and movie buffs put their brains together to celebrate Greta Gerwig's Barbie and Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer. The two films, which released on the same day, July 21, were successful in their respective box offices.
In a recent interview with Variety where Cillian Murphy and Margot Robbie sat down together to talk about their works, Margot revealed that she was told to push Barbie's release date by an Oppenheimer producer.
Margot told Cillian Murphy, “One of your producers, Chuck Roven, called me, because we worked together on some other projects. And he was like, ‘I think you guys should move your date.’ And I was like, ‘We’re not moving our date. If you’re scared to be up against us, then you move your date.’ And he’s like, ‘We’re not moving our date. I just think it’d be better for you to move.’ And I was like, ‘We’re not moving!’ I think this is a really great pairing, actually. It’s a perfect double billing, Oppenheimer and Barbie.” Responding to the incident, the Peaky Blinders star praised her, “That was a good instinct.”
Continuing the conversation, Cillian went on to ask Margot if we should be expecting Barbie 2. She revealed, "We put everything into that movie and it's so good that I'm like ‘Oh no.’ I'm also so proud of the fact that it was an original and not a sequel or prequel, which is getting rare and rarer these days. Your movie too is original which is amazing that we both got theatrical opportunities for original ideas. The part of me would be like ‘Oh No’ if we do Barbie 2…I don't know… But at the same time, I would do anything to be back on that set. I would do anything to be back on sets with Ryan (Gosling, co-actor) and Greta (Gerwig, director). Playing Barbie is the best. It's so joyful. so, it's not a no but also I would take a lot to live up to."
As per reports, Barbie earned $ 1.44 billion worldwide and holds 16th position among the biggest films in terms of worldwide collection in the history. The film is also said to be the biggest film ever to be directed by a woman.
Barbie, which takes inspiration from Mattel’s iconic doll, stars Margot Robbie in the lead role as the Stereotypical Barbie and Ryan Gosling playing Ken. The film also features America Ferrera, Issa Rae, Simu Liu, Michael Cera, Kate McKinnon, Will Ferrell, among others.
Oppenheimer is based on the life of Robert Oppenheimer, the American theoretical physicist who is called the 'father of the atomic bomb' and his role in the Manhattan Project during World War II. Oppenheimer has been credited as the director of the Los Alamos Laboratory, a place known for assembling bombs. Apart from Cilian, Oppenheimer also stars Florence Pugh, Robert Downey Jr, Gary Oldman, Rami Malek, and Kenneth Branagh, among others. The film earned more than $950 million worldwide.
