The Super Mario Bros. Movie records biggest opening ever for an animated film

The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the feature length adaptation of the iconic video game character, hit the theatres last week. The film has exceeded all expectations and has scored the biggest box office opening ever for an animated film. With a domestic gross of $204.6 million and a worldwide gross of $377 million, the film has dethroned Frozen II as the animated film with the best opening. Frozen II had earlier collected $358 million.

The film has lifted the curse of video game adaptations, which were traditionally expected to fare worse at the box office. HBO’s The Last Of Us has done the same for television adaptations of beloved video game franchises. The Super Mario Bros. Movie is based on characters created by Nintendo, who produced the film along with the animation studio Illumination Entertainment.

Directed by Aaron Horvath, Michael Jelenic, the film has Chris Pratt voicing Mario while Anya-Taylor Joy voices Princess Peach, Charlie Day voicing Luigi, and Jack Black voicing Bowser.
