Margot Robbie-led Pirates of the Caribbean film is no longer happening

In a recent interview, Margot Robbie revealed that the planned reboot of the Pirates of the Caribbean film is no longer happening. It was earlier revealed that the franchise would go a new direction, without Depp’s involvement but new reports have surfaced that Depp would return as Jack Sparrow. The planned spinoff film will have Robbie leading the cast with a new set of characters.

After revealing that the plans for the film are essentially dead, Robbie said, “We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led—not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story—which we thought would’ve been really cool, but I guess they (Disney) don’t want to do it.”

In the same interview, she also expressed her interest in working with directors like Paul Thomas Anderson, Bong Joon Ho, and Céline Sciamma going forward. Robbie is currently promoting her upcoming film Babylon, directed by Whiplash fame Damien Chazelle. She currently wrapped the filming for Barbie which also stars Ryan Gosling.

Although not confirmed, it has been heavily rumoured that Johnny Depp will return as Jack Sparrow and that Disney is reportedly working on a sixth instalment in the film series along with a spinoff television series.
