In an exclusive interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the showrunners of the epic-fantasy series House of the Dragon, have revealed that the show will be powerful, visceral, and dark. The show is set two hundred years before the events of the critically acclaimed Game of Thrones series which ended its eight-season run in 2019.

Apart from calling it dark and visceral, Showrunners Miguel Sapochnik and Ryan J Condal have also likened the show to Shakespearean tragedies. It is worth noting that Miguel Sapochnik had previously directed the final episode of the sixth season of Game of Thrones titled Battle of the Bastards. The episode received widespread acclaim and went on to win Emmy Awards for writing and direction.

House of the Dragon revolves around the beginning of the end of House Targaryen, the house that ruled all of Westeros with their ability to tame and ride dragons. The series is set to depict the events leading up to the Targaryen civil war known as Dance of the Dragons. The first half of the series will reportedly show Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower as teens before jumping ten years into the future. Both the younger and adult versions of the characters are played by Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke respectively.

House of the Dragon is based on author George R R Martin’s Fire & Blood. The series adapts the second half of the first volume of the book which chronicles the rise and fall of House Targaryen.

The series is set to premiere its first episode on 21 August on HBO in the US and on Disney+ Hotstar in India. The epic fantasy drama will clash with Amazon’s Lord of the Rings prequel titled The Rings of Power which also tackles a similar genre.
