George R R Martin wants to build a Marvel/Star Wars style universe for his Game of Thrones franchise

George R R Martin, the author of Game of Thrones, has expressed interest in building out his stories in the style of the Marvel and Star Wars universes. HBO recently premiered the first episode of House of the Dragon, the prequel series to the highly successful Game of Thrones series. With the highly anticipated series finale of Game of Thrones leaving fans disappointed, all eyes are on the prequel series to see if it could revive the franchise.

Game of Thrones is adapted form the fantasy novel series A Song of Ice and Fire, written by George R R Martin. He even served as an executive producer in the series, maintaining creative control in the early stages of the show. However, since the author was busy working on finishing the long-run book series and since the television series surpassed the storyline of the published books, his involvement in the series diminished during the final seasons. The lukewarm response to the series ending was also attributed to this.

Now, the author is back to the prequel series, reclaiming the same amounts of creative control he had during the early seasons of Game of Thrones. Reports suggest that as many as five prequel series are currently being developed in HBO based on Martin’s novels. The author hopes that the House of the Dragon's success might help become the final push for the studio executives to greenlight the projects. Talking about his wish to expand the franchise into interconnected story universes like Marvel and Star Wars, George R R Martin said, “How many shows will make it to air? I don’t know, but I hope the answer will be several and we’ll have something akin to the Marvel or Star Wars model by the time it’s all settled.”
