Owen Wilson on board Disney's Haunted Mansion reboot

We had earlier reported that a Haunted Mansion reboot is in development at Disney with Tiffany Haddish and LaKeith Stanfield headlining the project. Now, the project has added actor Owen Wilson to the cast.

The reboot is set to be directed by Justin Simien, famous for Dear White People and Bad Hair, from a script written by Katie Dippold. Haunted Mansion is based on the scary theme park ride which first opened at Disneyland in 1969. The ride took guests through a terrifying manor filled with ghosts, ghouls and various other undead residents. It was also one of the only attractions in which Disney employees were encouraged not to smile.

Plot details are currently kept under wraps, but it is known that the film will follow a family that moves into the titular mansion. The shoot of the reboot is expected to begin next month in Atlanta.

Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich are attached to produce the film through their Rideback banner. Nick Reynolds of Rideback will serve as executive producer. Katie Dippold has penned the most recent draft of the screenplay.

The amusement park ride was previously used to develop a 2003 family-friendly horror comedy film The Haunted Mansion, starring Eddie Murphy. Meanwhile, Disney is also developing films on other popular rides like Space Mountain and Town of Terror.

Wilson most recently starred as Mobius in Marvel's Loki. The actor will soon be seen in Wes Anderson's The French Dispatch. He has also finished shooting the romantic comedy Marry Me, co-starring Jennifer Lopez.
