Susan Sarandon, Anna Friel to star in drama series Monarch

Actors Susan Sarandon and Anna Friel will headline an upcoming Fox series titled Monarch.

The country music dynasty drama is created by Melissa London Hilfers and is described as a multigenerational musical drama about Romans, America’s first family of country music. the family is headed by a talented, tough as nails artist called Dottie Cantrell Roman (Sarandon), who is called as the Queen of Country Music. Along with her husband Albie, she has created a country music dynasty, whose name is synonymous with authenticity. Yet, the unshakable truth is that the very foundation of their success is a lie, which begins to put their royalty in jeopardy. The heir to the crown Nicolette “Nicky” Roman (Friel) has to protect the legacy and also ensure her quest to stardom.

Monarch is produced by Fox Entertainment. Hilfers will write and executive produce, while Michael Rauch will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Gail Berman and Hend Baghdady also executive produce alongside Sandbox Entertainment’s Jason Owen. Jason Ensler will direct and executive produce the first episode.

The series is slated to debut on January 30, 2022.

Sarandon was most recently seen in Blackbird and will soon be seen in the John Kennedy Toole biopic, The Butterfly in the Typewriter. She received her most recent Emmy nomination for her performance as Bette Davis in the limited series Feud.

Friel is known for her starring role in Pushing Daisies. Her recent TV credits include Deep Water, Butterfly, The Girlfriend Experience and Broken. She will appear in The Box miniseries from Adi Hasak. On the film side, she currently stars in Books of Blood, Charming the Hearts of Men, and Sulphur & White.
