Ted Lasso, The Crown, Hacks, Mare of Easttown win big at Primetime Emmy Awards 2021

The Crown, Ted Lasso, and Mare of Easttown won big at the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards. After a virtual show last year, the awards show returned to live audience, and was hosted by Cedric the Entertainer for the first time. 

In fact, the three TV shows won 10 out of 12 acting awards. While Jason Sudeikis won the award for outstanding lead actor in a comedy for Ted Lasso, Kate Winslet took home the award for best lead actress in a limited series or movie for her turn as detective sergeant as Mare Sheehan in Mare of Easttown.

Ted Lasso actors Hannah Waddingham and Brett Goldstein won awards for Best Supporting actors for a comedy series. Similarly, Mare of Easttown actors Julianne Nicholson and Evan Peters picked up both supporting actor awards in the limited series category. Ewan McGregor won the Outstanding Actor in a limited series or movie for his performance in Halston. 

The Crown won a whopping seven awards, including wins for Supporting Actress (Gillian Anderson), Supporting Actor (Tobias Menzies), Writing (Peter Morgan), Directing (Jessica Hobbs), Lead Actress (Olivia Colman), Lead Actor (Josh O' Connor) and Best Series.

If it was The Crown that dominated the drama series categories, it was Hacks that was everywhere in the comedy series categories. Jean Smart picked up her fourth Emmy for her role as stand-up comic Deborah Vance in the series, which also won the writing and directing awards.

Saturday Night Live and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver picked up the awards for Outstanding Variety Sketch series and Outstanding Variety Talk Series, respectively.

Scott Frank won the Emmy for Outstanding directing for a limited or anthology series or movie for the The Queen's Gambit. In what went down as a moment in history, Michaela Coel became the first Black woman to win a writing Emmy for her work in I May Destroy You.  

Netflix's The Crown and Disney Plus The Mandalorian led the nominations with 24 each, followed by Marvel and Disney Plus' WandaVision with 23 and Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale with 21.

HBO and HBO Max topped networks and streamers with 130 total nominations, followed closely behind by Netflix with 129.
