For Karthik Mohan MPSE, the sound of cinema has always been more than just background, its the emotional core of storytelling. Growing up in the culturally vibrant city of Chennai, Karthik developed an early interest in how audio shaped the moviegoing experience. Today, he crafts soundscapes for major productions out of Los Angeles, blending technical mastery with artistic sensitivity.
His fascination with the medium took shape after watching Uttama Villain, which led him to attend a masterclass by Randy Thom of Skywalker Sound, an encounter that sparked a deeper pursuit. He later trained at Chapman University in California where he pursued his MFA – Film Production with a sound design emphasis, gaining hands-on experience with Dolby Atmos workflows and Digital Surround Sound mixing techniques on the Avid S6 console, skills that became instrumental as he transitioned to a career in Hollywood.
Karthik's breakout moment came with Las Escondidas, a film that earned him a nomination for the Verna Fields Golden Reel Award, presented by the Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE), a highly regarded organization for professionals in sound post-production. Since then, he has won an Honorable Mention for Best Sound Design at the Los Angeles Film Awards for the experimental film Saudade and has collaborated on films that have premiered at festivals like Cannes, Tribeca, Rotterdam, with credits across leading streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, AMC+, The Roku Channel.
His diverse portfolio includes the action-packed spectacle Jawan starring Shah Rukh Khan, the biggest Indian box-office hit of 2023, also released on Netflix and screened in over 10,000 theatres worldwide, including premium formats like IMAX and 4DX. Jawan also stood out as the only Indian film nominated at the 2024 Astra Awards, hosted in Los Angeles by the Hollywood Creative Alliance. He has also worked on the intense war documentary Interpreters Wanted, Karthik Subbaraj’s action dramas Mahaan and Jigarthanda Double X along with several critically acclaimed festival hits like Four Samosas, Paper Flowers, Max Dagan among others.

With his position as a voting member of MPSE, Karthik continues to shape the audio identity of films across genres. “Sound isn’t just what you hear, it’s what you feel,” he says. And with more international projects in the pipeline, he’s pushing boundaries one frame at a time.
