The trailer of Abhishek Kapoor’s much-anticipated disaster drama, Kedarnath, starring Sushant Singh Rajput and debutante Sara Ali Khan, was released today. In it, we are introduced to Sushant’s pithoo (porter) character, a young Muslim boy carrying pilgrims to the Kedarnath Temple, who falls in love with a Hindu girl played by Sara.

The film is set against the backdrop of the 2013 flash floods in North India and recreates the havoc and tragedy of the massive natural disaster, which affected 4,500 villages and left more than 5000 people dead.

“I’ve travelled to Kedarnath many times and observed the life in the region. When the floods happened in 2013, I was deeply affected by the pain and agony of the people who went through that disaster. I knew it was important to share their pain and their story with the entire nation,” director Abhishek Kapoor said at the trailer launch.

Kedarnath is co-produced by Ronnie Screwvala’s RSVP Movies and Pragya Kapoor’s Guy in the Sky Pictures. The film marks the debut of Sara Ali Khan, daughter of Bollywood actors, Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh.

“When I read the script of Kedarnath, I was entirely lost in the vision and the world that the writers had created. I was finishing my studies and knew I just had to do the film. Both my parents, thankfully, were very supportive of my decision; however, I was so convinced that I wouldn't have listened to anyone anyway,” Sara said.

Addressing the controversy surrounding the inter-faith love story depicted in the film, Abhishek said, “We’ve made this film with a lot of love and a lot of faith. I am sure once the film comes out, people will find nothing objectionable about it. We have released the teaser and trailer so far; I guess when people see the film in its entirety, all such doubts will be cleared.”

Fielding a question about the contradictions between science and faith, Sushant, who is popular on social media for his scientific musings, said, “Science is one of the many paths of arriving at the truth. Faith, too, is another path. I don't think they need to contradict in every aspect.” Asked if he is a follower of Lord Shiva, the actor added, “Yes, I am. I stay connected with him through different ways.”

Kedarnath is scheduled for release on December 7.
