Preparation for Pa Ranjith's Hindi debut underway: Producer Shareen Mantri

Up-and-coming Bollywood producer Shareen Mantri is collaborating with Tamil filmmaker Pa Ranjith on his Hindi debut directorial. The film, a big-budget period biopic, will be bankrolled by Shareen's Namah Pictures, which also produced Iranian filmmaker Majid Majidi's Mumbai-set film, Beyond The Clouds.

When asked about her decision to collaborate with Ranjith, Shareen says, "Like Majid Majidi, Pa Ranjith is a great talent. The canvas of the film is such that we felt Ranjith would be the perfect choice for us," adding, "The film is a true story of an extraordinary individual who lived an exemplary life, a true 'Hero'. We will be making the final announcement on the subject very soon. Meanwhile, prep has already begun for the film."

Earlier reports claimed that the film was based on Silk Smitha, but Shareen denied the reports. Ranjith, meanwhile, has started work on a separate web-series.

When quizzed about her interest in biopics, Shareen says, "Any story that needs to be told or a person's journey that’s exciting or something unique were are open to. Besides the Ranjith film, we are making two biopics of two very different women whose journeys have been extraordinary. One of them is India’s first doctor Anandi Gopal Joshi and the other one is Sunny Leone who was an adult star from a simple Punjabi family and has lived her life on her own terms. While they are both biopics the treatment is totally different for each. So I’m open to all kinds of genres."

The Producers Guild of India recently joined the Kollywood industry by demanding a set clause for Virtual Print Free (VPF) of digital distribution of films. Sharing her thoughts about this, Shareen says, "We are happy about the initiatives being taken. I feel the call for inclusion of sunset clause is fair and just."
