‘Ladoo was earlier envisioned as a TV series’

There seems to be no dearth of youth-centric entertainers in Malayalam cinema as newbie filmmakers are coming up with fresh and innovative ways to narrate familiar ideas. The latest is Arungeorge K David's Ladoo, a romantic comedy, which revolves around two friends helping out with a friend's register marriage. "We are not making any tall claims," says the director. "It's a pure commercial entertainer."

The subject was initially envisioned as a TV series back in 2016, with a plan to tell a different story in each episode, targeted at the youth—something with a real-life connect. "When we approached some of the major TV channels, they weren't interested. We were told that there was no audience for subjects like these, and that people are not watching much TV these days. We finally decided that turning it into a feature would take less time. We pitched it to several studios and finally, Mini Studio (an offshoot of actor Dhanush's Wunderbar Films) came on board," says Arungeorge, who had penned the script for Masala Republic (2014).

Shabareesh Varma, Balu Varghese, Vinay Forrt, Dileesh Pothan, Indrans, Pashanam Shaji and Manoj Guinness are all part of the cast. "There are six male characters with equal importance, and they appear throughout the film. The central character is actually the heroine's. She is a newcomer, a Malayali. Bobby Simha (Jigarthanda fame) is playing the antagonist."

Arungeorge describes Shabareesh's character as a die-hard Allu Arjun fan. "He talks like him and even dresses like him. So one can say that this is like an Allu Arjun film (laughs)."

Apparently, the film's main highlight is its music. The soundtrack consists of 15 tracks, out of which three are songs. Premam-fame Rajesh Murugesan is the music composer.

Theevandi-fame Gautham Shankar is the cinematographer, and Lal Krishnan, the editor. S Vinodkumar is producing the film under the banner of Mini Studio. Ladoo is expected to be released in early November.
