A mad director, an evergreen star… and a kidnapped Sonam Kapoor. That’s the setup of Vikramaditya Motwane’s AK vs AK, a meta-comedy set in Bollywood where Anurag Kashyap and Anil Kapoor duke it out as fictional versions of themselves.

After a Q&A session turns sour, Anurag kidnaps Sonam to settle his score with Anil (fans can trace their mock-rivalry back to the days of Alwyn Kalicharan, a dystopian thriller the two were meant to do together but couldn’t). Known for his brand of dark, realistic films, Anurag sets his ground rules: save your daughter in ten hours while being filmed by hidden cameras monitored by the director himself. No outsiders, no cops, and no cop-out allowed. Anil, in frazzled but jhakaas style, is game.

Is this Borat? Funny Games? A Cock and Bull Story? Or just a darker, edgier version of Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives?

The concept, Vikram revealed in a bizarro press conference where Anurag and Anil kept slating each other, was given to him by an LA-based friend seven years ago. Anil said he came on board to show the world "who’s the real AK," while Anurag kept putting him down as an "80s actor." Weirder still, the leads couldn’t agree which version of the trailer should go out, screening their own ‘cuts’ they felt bested the other.

“We are live from the press con from AK vs AK. Keeping the best interests of the film in mind, I am releasing this trailer but this isn't what I had signed up for. It’s okay for now. But I’ll have my team release another one. The REAL trailer for Ak vs AK,” Anil tweeted.

AK vs AK is set to premiere on Netflix on December 24.
