Anuja Chauhan’s bestselling novel The Zoya Factor followed a young advertising executive who proves to be a lucky charm for the Indian cricket team. The book has been adapted into a Hindi romantic-comedy directed by Abhishek Sharma and starring Sonam Kapoor and Dulquer Salmaan.

The film’s trailer, which dropped on Thursday, introduces us to Zoya Solanki (Sonam) — a fortuitous millennial born on the day of India’s 1983 world cup win. Despite her father (played by Sanjay Kapoor, Sonam’s real-life uncle) betting big on Zoya’s stars, she struggles to keep up in her professional and private life. Her fortune turns when she runs into the present captain of the Indian cricket team (Dulquer) casts a happy spell on the boys, who start lucking out on the pitch. However, in a country where cricket and superstition go hand in glove (excuse the pun), things soon take a turn for the darkly comic. We see effigies being burnt of Zoya and primetime astrologers deifying her on National TV. The obvious questions pop: can love trump luck? Can Zoya bat her way out of this sticky wicket? How will her innings end, happy or sad? At the moment, it’s all a bit of a toss.

The Zoya Factor is produced by Fox Star Studios, Pooja Shetty and Aarrti Shetty. The film also stars Angad Bedi, Sikander Kher, Manu Rishi and Rahul Khanna. The music is by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. The film is slated for release September 20, 2020.
