The trailer of Dhanush’s upcoming bilingual Sir, also releasing in Tamil as Vaathi was unveiled today at an event in AMB cinemas, Hyderabad. The event, which was originally scheduled to take place at 4pm, started two hours later. The trailer launch event was attended by the film’s leads Dhanush and Samyuktha along with members of the film’s crew. Anchor Suma hosted the launch event.

Written and directed by Venkat Atluri, the 34-year old filmmaker will be seen making a marked departure from his slate of romantic dramas, Tholiprema (2018), Majnu (2019) and Rang De (2021) with this intense social drama, set around the educational system.

Cheekily referring to the criticism he received for his earlier films and how that spurred the urge in him to write something different for his next project, Venky Atluri said, “The story evolved from all the memes that mocked my films, while raising the sharp observation that in every film of mine, I shift my base to a foreign country in the second half of my films. Then I wrote Sir’s story and narrated it to Dhanush. He liked it instantly and gave his dates. Dhanush sir agreeing to work in my film was one of the most precious moments in my life.” Acknowledging the contribution of composer GV Prakash Kumar in Sir, Atluri added, “Dhanush and GV Prakash had many blockbusters together, and I hope this film, among other things, will get the recognition it deserves for its background score”.

Expressing his happiness at the release of his first Telugu film, Dhanush commented, “Now we no longer speak about Telugu or Hindi or Telugu cinema, it’s Indian cinema. The story of Sir unfolds at a place that borders Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, and one can witness both Tamil and Telugu flavours in the story of Sir. I am thankful to Venky Atluri for this film. My sincere thanks to the entire team”. Apologising to his fans for not knowing the lyrics of the Telugu version, Dhanush later went on to sing a few lines of ‘Va Vaathi’, a single from the film upon the request of the fans present at the event.

Vaathi/Sir is all geared to release in theatres on February 17. Produced by Naga Vamsi and Sai Soujanya under the banner Sithara Entertainments and Fortune Four Cinemas, Sir also stars Samuthirakani, Sai Kumar, Tanikella Bharani, Thotapalli Madhu, Harish Peradi and Hyper Aadi in pivotal roles. The cinematography of Sir has been done by J Yuvraj, with Sithara Entertainments’ frequent collaborators Navin Nooli and Avinash Kolla providing editing and production design for the film respectively.
