RRR hits big at the Japan box office

The hype and excitement about SS Rajamouli's epic actioner RRR refuse to die down even seven months after its original Indian release. After emerging as a historical success in India and then creating a storm in the US, the film is now making heads turn in Japan.

According to Variety, the film made grossed JPY73 million, equating to $495,000, in its first week of run at the Japan box office. This figure makes it the highest first-week collections for an Indian film in Japan, as per the data provided by Twin, the studio that distributed the film in Japan. The film took the 10th spot in the box office charts, with Japanese films occupying the rest.

Variety reports that the film was released in 209 screens and 31 Imax screens across 44 locations, which also happens to be the biggest-ever release for an Indian film in the country.

The film has reportedly surpassed the first-week collections of The Bad Guys, Spencer and Jurassic World Dominion, with the distributor telling Variety that the film will recoup its release expenses and start making a profit within 10 days of release.

Interestingly, Rajamouli's Baahubali 2: The Conclusion is currently the second highest-grossing Indian film in Japan, with Rajinikanth's Muthu reigning in the top spot.

3 Idiots, English Vinglish, PadMan and Dangal are among other top grossers in the country.
